GA4 has been fully live for over a year and many brands still haven't set it up correctly. If your analytics aren't tracking properly, every decision you make based on that data is built on sand.
The Essential Setup Checklist
- Enable Enhanced Measurement: Scroll depth, outbound clicks, file downloads, video engagement — all free with one toggle.
- Configure Key Events: Define what a "conversion" means for your business — purchase, lead form, WhatsApp click, call — and mark those as Key Events.
- Set up Audiences: Build audiences for cart abandoners, high-value visitors, and returning customers. These power your remarketing.
- Link Google Ads and Search Console: Closes the loop between ad spend, organic performance, and on-site behaviour.
- Custom Reports & Explorations: Default reports are rarely enough. Build Exploration reports for funnel analysis, path exploration, and cohort tracking.
- Data Retention: Set to 14 months (default is 2 months). You'll thank yourself come annual review time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don't compare GA4 data to Universal Analytics — the measurement model is different. Don't rely on "sessions" as your primary metric; GA4 is event-based. And always validate your data with a test transaction before declaring setup complete.
